The fourth-generation model has remained available alongside this. The fifth-generation lineup, featuring Apple Silicon, was introduced in November 2020 in the original silver style. This model also has solid-state storage and replaces most of the data ports with USB-C sockets. The 2018 fourth-generation Mac Mini model has Thunderbolt, an Intel Core i5 or i7 CPU, and also changed the case's default silver for space gray. The third-generation, which was unveiled in June 2010, had a thinner, unibody aluminum case and an HDMI port, and was more readily positioned as a home theater device and an alternative to the Apple TV.

It featured more advanced components and internal software updates, and it switched the CPU to the Intel Core Solo.

In February 2006, Apple announced the second-generation lineup. In January 2005, the original Mac Mini was introduced with the PowerPC G4 CPU. The machine was initially branded as "BYODKM" (Bring Your Own Display, Keyboard, and Mouse) as a strategic pitch to encourage users to switch from PCs running operating systems such as Microsoft Windows and Linux. Since launch, it has shipped without a display, keyboard, and mouse.

The fact that Apple has soldered the CPU into place will not really trouble most users, as CPU replacement is relatively rare, though the RAM being soldered into its slot will certainly affect more people who were hoping to upgrade the 2014 Mac mini themselves. While user replacement of components is not extremely common, there are plenty of users out there that look to upgrade a machine when it reaches further along in its lifespan, and some replace the components on day one to save money on higher-specification models, whilst others just replace failed components themselves after the machine goes out of warranty. iFixit tore down the Mac mini 1.4GHz Core i5 and 4GB of RAM variant, and found that Apple had soldered the Samsung-made 1600MHz LPDDR3 RAM into its slot, unlike the previous model, as well as the dual-core Intel i5 4260U processor.

Repair and teardown specialist iFixit on Monday published a full teardown of the new Mac mini revealing that Apple has soldered two components to the PC's logic board, ensuring that users are not able to replace them themselves. Those who had been waiting for Apple to unveil the new Mac mini were ecstatic, however, much of that excitement may die down after a teardown revealed the decisions Apple had taken about the innards of the small form factor PC. After two years, Apple last week announced the refreshed Mac mini, alongside the new iPad and iMac models at an event in California.
